What Causes Male Sexual Dysfunction?

Many men’s sexual health issues disrupt a fulfilling sex life. Issues such as erectile dysfunction (ED), ejaculation issues, low testosterone, and underlying health conditions like heart disease, cancer, or Peyronie’s Disease can cause complications during sexual activity. Sexual dysfunction often leaves both parties unsatisfied and can cause devastating relationship issues.

Understanding issues that affect your sexual health and knowing what to look for may result in early detection and rapid treatment. Identifying the problem as soon as possible is essential for improving your sexual health.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, is a common problem where a man may have difficulty obtaining and keeping an erection firm enough for intercourse. Erectile dysfunction affects 50% of American men over the age of 40.

Blood flow problems such as high blood pressure or vascular days often cause erectile dysfunction. Other factors increase the risk of becoming impotent, like using drugs and alcohol, smoking, and prostate cancer. Impotence can also result from heightened emotional states. Stress, depression, and other psychological issues may result in erectile dysfunction.

Physicians treat most cases of erectile dysfunction using medication, which works for 50-70% of men. In cases where medication is ineffective, surgical interventions like artery reconstruction and penile implants can alleviate the problem.

Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s disease manifests when plaque, or scar tissue, builds up in the penis’ erectile tissue. Although the cause of plaque build-up isn’t clear, many men who experience bleeding inside the penis contract Peyronie’s Disease. This condition is non-cancerous but can cause the penis to bend upward and downward and typically causes pain when forming an erection.

An ultrasound scan usually detects the build of these plaques. In most mild cases of Peyronie’s disease, pain alleviates after 6-12 months, and the patient can return to an enjoyable sex life. Specific interventions such as collagenase injections break down the plaque and relieve pain in more severe cases.

Low Testosterone

Testosterone is a hormone produced in the testicles which affects appearance and sexual development. It is directly related to a man’s sperm count, desire for sex, and mood. Low testosterone often impacts men’s sex drive and is related to other issues such as low sperm counts, hair loss, and loss of muscle mass.

Although testosterone levels decrease as you age, there are some things you can do to help increase levels. Adding resistance training and foods rich in zinc and Vitamin D to your lifestyle and diet may help maintain testosterone levels. Hormone replacement therapy can also help to increase testosterone levels in more severe cases.

Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common and can cause a range of problems for men and women. Infections such as chlamydia, herpes, and syphilis cause symptoms, including pain, swelling, and sores to develop on the penis. STIs can also lead to erectile dysfunction and increase the risk of prostate cancer.

Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is an issue where a man ejaculates during intercourse sooner than expected or desired. It is a common issue affecting as many as 1 in 3 men. Erectile dysfunction has many causes, including psychological and biological factors. For example, men who experience erectile dysfunction may develop a rushed ejaculation pattern due to anxiety about losing an erection.

Talking with a doctor can be enough to alleviate concerns over premature ejaculation. Premature ejaculation can be embarrassing, but learning that it is normal for it to occur occasionally can help improve sexual performance.
